Hold tech companies accountable for addictive design that harms young people

Introduce mandatory digital literacy in all UK schools

Set age limits and safeguards for AI companions

Young people deserve to grow up in a world where online platforms are safe, ethical, and accountable.

Our Youth Leaders

The internet was never designed with young people in mind. We're changing that.

For Us is a UK wide youth led coalition born from the urgent need to address how artificial intelligence and social media platforms are designed to manipulate young minds. Our movement represents the voices of millions of young people who refuse to accept a digital future built on exploitation.

Founded by young activists, digital rights advocates, and concerned youth organisations, we bridge the gap between grassroots youth movements and policy reform. We work directly with parliamentarians, tech companies, and educators to create systemic change that puts young people's wellbeing first.

Our coalition includes youth boards from major charities, student unions, digital rights groups, and thousands of individual young people aged 17-25. Together, we're building a future where technology serves humanity, not corporate pockets.

Our Mission

Why We Exist

From addictive design to unregulated AI, young people are facing an online world that wasn’t built with us in mind.

It’s time to take a stand. Let’s build a future where tech is made with young people, not at our expense.

This time, build and design it For Us.

1. Manipulative Design

Social media platforms use psychological tricks to keep us hooked: infinite scroll, autoplay, streaks, and algorithmic recommendations that keep us online longer than we want to be. It's exploitative and it's by design.

2. Privacy & Data Exploitation

Our data is collected, tracked, and monetised. Young users often don’t understand how much is taken from them or how it’s used.

3. Algorithmic Bias

AI systems shape our feeds, recommendations, and search results. But these systems often reinforce bias, spread misinformation, and operate without transparency.

4. AI + Emerging Tech

AI is reshaping the digital world faster than policy can keep up. Without clear standards, AI risks amplifying harm, spreading deepfakes, targeting young users with manipulative content, and making harmful decisions without human oversight.

*Manifesto*

We believe in an online world where young people are safe, empowered, and respected. We believe in education for all and safety by design.

That starts with three core pledges:

1. Tech Built and Designed For Us

We demand that online platforms and AI systems are developed with the well-being and developmental needs of young people as a primary consideration, not for profit. This includes transparent algorithms, ethical design principles, and mechanisms for user control. We want to prioritise mental health over engagement metrics, and thereby prohibit the provision of addictive design to anyone under the age of 16.

2. Digital Literacy Education For All

Every young person deserves comprehensive, up-to-date digital literacy education, equipping them with the critical thinking skills to navigate complex online environments, understand AI's impact, and protect their privacy and mental health. We want mandatory digital citizenship education in every UK school, from age 9+.

3. Raise the Age for AI Companions to 16

AI friends and emotional bots are being marketed to kids with no safeguards from harmful content. They can blur boundaries, manipulate emotions, and replace real support. We’re calling for a minimum age of 16 for AI companions, with regulation and oversight. We advocate to protect developing minds from manipulative AI, prevent emotional dependency and privacy risks, and ensure responsible AI integration.
